4 Festive Family Days Out In North East England

Christmas is coming, and with so many hours of darkness, cold and probably snow headed our way, it’s a good thing that those of us from the north know how to have a great time. We’ve rounded up a few fun activities for you and your family to enjoy this year, so wrap up warm and head on out. Here we go:

1. Christmas at Gibside, Gateshead

What is it? Christmas at Gibside is a new after-dark illuminated trail through festive gardens. The trail takes about 90 minutes to walk, with glittering tunnels of lights, light shows and garlands from every tree. Walk under giant baubles and trees drenched in dazzling colours. Don’t forget to grab a warm drink as you go. Kids might get lucky and spot Santa out and about on the trail too!

Where is it? The light spectacular is occurring on the National Trust land at Gibside, near Rowland Gill, Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, NE16 6BG.

When is it? 26th November – 2nd January.

2. The Web Adventure Park Christmas Festival, York

What is it? The Christmas festival at Web Adventure Park promises to be a fun-filled event that will make festive memories. The entry fee includes a visit with Santa himself, a handful of cheeky elves, and the opportunity to meet some real reindeer in the animal area. There is even a magician on-site, performing tricks to spellbind the children. Parents can relax with a luxury hot chocolate or a glass of wine, while kids big and small can take unlimited rides on the Christmas Fairground.

Where is it? You’ll find Web Adventure Park at Wigginton Road, York, YO32 2RH.

When is it? Saturdays and Sundays until Christmas, plus the 18th -24th December.

3. Santa at the Station, Darlington

What is it? Find Santa stopping briefly in the Head of Steam Darlington railway museum, an ideal venue for train enthusiasts and historians alike. Meet the jolly man himself in his magical grotto, receive a Christmas present and take a ride on the mini train. In addition, there are arts and craft opportunities on-site for the little ones to enjoy.

Where is it? Head of Steam – Darlington Railway Museum, Station Road, Darlington, Co. Durham, DL3 6ST.

When is it? Catch Santa here from the 4th – 19th December.

4. The Polar Express, Northallerton

What is it? Capturing the magic of the 2004 film, The Polar Express will pick you up at Leeming Bar station and transport you all the way to the North Pole. Meet characters from the film as they sing and dance through the carriages to the wonder and delight of your children. Even the grimmest of parents will be grinning by the time they get to meet Santa.

Once you return to the station, check whether you’re on the naughty or nice list, write your letter to Santa and maybe pick up a souvenir of your experience.

Where is it? Leeming Bar Station, Leases Rd, Leeming Bar, Northallerton DL7 9AR

When is it? 27th November
